Abstract deutsch

Abstract englisch

Farmers increasingly are faced with questions of resources consumption and the subsequent effects of their production systems on the environment. In combination with social requirements and the expected change/shortage problems (climate impacts, energy) every farmer should carry out a comprehensive system analysis in order to detect the strengths and weaknesses of his farm. The goal of such an analysis should be a good balance between economy and ecology. Life cycle assessment, a method in environmental management originally developed for industrial applications, can be used to identify environmental hotspots or for comparative analyses. In Austria, life cycle assessment was used so far primarily in commercial-producing sectors upon the requests of the legislator or for marketing purposes (chemical and construction industry). The investigation of material and nutrient flows in Austrian agricultural farms at the system boundary farm gate should be extended by using life cycle assessment methods. In the present project, the introduction of the single-farm based evaluation of agricultural life cycle assessments will be pursued. Essentially, the following goals will be achieved: (i) increase in efficiency of agricultural farms with consideration of economic and ecological production functions, (ii) assessment of agricultural performances and environmental effects, (iii) creation of data bases for decision makers along the food chain (farmers, authorities, food production and consumers). The novelty and the advantage in this project are: To create a possibility for Austrian farmers, consultants and decision makers for evaluation of environmental effects of agricultural branches and in the long run to judge and to evaluate the entire farm by life cycle assessment. In the course of the project a simple operation of the evaluation instrument (life cycle assessment tool) and an interactive evaluation possibility will be developed which can contribute to the improvement of production and can serve as starting point for the improvement of environmental performances.
